repro om 616 om 617

From Kenneth Agabus  & Werner Von Watzdorf :

The intake was purposely shaped to fit into tight spaces, under truck cabs, drawing intake air from remotely mounted cyclonic air cleaner/filter, since these engines were primarily used to power smaller South African built COE Japanese trucks.

ADE (Atlantis Diesel Engines) manufactured a wide variety of diesel engines under license or copies of a range of big international brands such as Perkins, Mercedes Benz and MAN.

From the small ADE616(OM616 copy) all the way to the big 650 horsepower 22-litre V12. One of the backbones of South African industry under heavy international sanctions, during the 1980’s and early 90’s, they powered almost everything which required a diesel engine, from generators to Land Rovers and Land cruisers to farm tractors, on- and off-highway trucks, construction equipment, mining machinery and big military vehicles like tanks and self propelled howitzers.

Though generally regarded as of lesser quality than the originals, they were good quality and still respected today, some 40 years after they were produced
